Addictions to substancesAddictions are generally seen as a way to relieve and thus not or hardly experience any emotions and/or emotional pain. Many addictions make you numb for a while, so you won’t or can’t feel anything. Addictions can also be a family pattern, a way of ‘coping’ with things. Children copy their parents’ coping behaviour as a way of dealing with things. Or the children try to carry a family member’s burden and if this gets too much the person get addicted in order not to feel anymore.
Another possibility is that an addiction is an (constant) act of self destruction. The person doesn’t love himself perhaps as a result of emotional abuse and abuses himself in a different way. Addictions can also be seen systemically as a slow way of killing yourself. Or maybe the person is connected to an ancestor and entangled with this person’s fate. Usually the ancestor is an excluded deceased family member. The person wants to (subconsciously) follow the ancestor into death. The person knows the addiction is bad thing but is not able to stop. If you explore your family history you might find subconscious addictions patterns or entanglement within your family system. |
